Trump Fired Team Overseeing Big Tech Financial Ventures

Trump fired 20 technologists at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) investigating Big Tech's financial products.

Our Analysis

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is widely regarded as one of the most effective agencies in the government at protecting individual citizens when financial companies do them harm, "...generating more than $11 billion in relief for 25 million consumers."

As Big Tech companies enter the financial services market with "innovative" products, it's key for the CFPB to have a team of technologists that understand Big Tech's actions and can effectively evaluate them and hold them accountable.

Trump, via Elon Musk, has fired this entire team.

Further, since Elon Musk is trying to launch a new payments service on his company, X by firing the team that would have provided consumer protection against illegal and abusive actions taken by his company, Americans are left with little to no recourse if Elon's new service breaks the law or does unfair harm.

Both sides aren't the same:

What the "other side" did

Under President Biden, the CFBP expanded its oversight of Big Tech digital payment apps as well as Big Tech in general, to ensure that tech companies don't sell Americans' private data related to their digital payments without proper consent, protect them from fraud, and make sure that consumers are protected if their accounts are frozen without due process.
