Trump Endangered Vietnamese Civilians By Keeping US Landmines In Place

Trump's administration ordered the halting of funds to mine-clearing programs globally

Our Analysis

Although the Vietnam War ended in 1975, bombs and landmines laid by the US are still there and kill people to this day.

Trump's administration ordered the halting of funds to mine-clearing programs globally for at least three months, leaving these mines intact and able to kill people.

Additionally, given that China has been willing to step up and help clear mines, this will lead towards countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos to build closer ties with Beijing rather than Washington.

The selfish among us may not care because it doesn't directly affect the US domestically, but this is still a cruel thing to do.

Both sides aren't the same:

What the "other side" did

Democrats have continued to support mine removal efforts and funding, including introducing and co-sponsoring the The Legacies of War Recognition and Unexploded Ordnance Removal Act which would remove landmines in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Although the bill is technically bipartisan, it has received little Republican co-sponsorship.
